Good morning, Principal, teachers, and fellow schoolmates,
I am Wu Ting Tim from Class 5D. Today, I am excited to talk about a vital yet often overlooked aspect of our cultural identity: National Intangible Cultural Heritage. As we explore the rich tapestry of cultures across more than 195 countries, we often celebrate impressive landmarks like the Great Wall of China or the pyramids of Egypt. However, it’s essential to recognize the intangible cultural heritage that defines and enriches the identities of these nations.
Intangible cultural heritage refers to the practices, expressions, knowledge, and skills that communities and individuals recognize as part of their cultural legacy. This heritage plays a crucial role in preserving cultural diversity amid the pressures of globalization. It highlights the distinctiveness of various cultures, such as the differences and similarities between Japanese and Chinese traditions.
China, with its history spanning over 5,000 years, is a treasure trove of intangible cultural heritage. From the ancient wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine to the vibrant dragon dance celebrated during Lunar New Year, these practices embody the spirit of our culture. One notable example is the Dragon Boat Festival, which commemorates Qu Yuan, a revered minister from the southern state of Chu during the Warring States period. After being banished and witnessing the fall of his city, Qu Yuan tragically took his own life by drowning. In his honor, people would race out in boats, throwing sticky rice into the water to distract the fish, giving rise to the beloved rice dumplings we enjoy today.
In Hong Kong, a city that beautifully blends modernity with tradition, many schools, including ours, actively participate in preserving our intangible cultural heritage through Chinese dance. This practice is vital for rehabilitating and revitalizing our cultural roots, ensuring that traditions are passed down from generation to generation.
As we look to the future, the responsibility of safeguarding our intangible cultural heritage lies in our hands. We are the storytellers of today and the guardians of tomorrow. By remembering our past, sharing our stories, and practicing our traditions, we can ensure that our rich cultural heritage continues to thrive.
Let us embrace this mission together and celebrate the significance of our National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Thank you!
