Morning Talk by 5B Ng Hyson

Good morning, everyone.

We all know what competition feels like—that rush of energy, the relentless drive to win, and maybe a little disappointment when things don't go your way. But today, I want to talk about an event where winning is only half the story: the National Games of China. We often focus on the records broken and the medals won, but what I find most inspiring about these games are the moments off the podium—the deep friendship and quiet respect that shine between athletes, even when they're fighting tooth and nail for gold. Let's look beyond the scores and see how real sportsmanship defines this massive national event.

We all know the intensity of a competition. The sweat, the noise, the rivalry—it was fierce. But just like the athletes at the National Games, true friendship isn’t found in easy victories; it’s forged in the fire of genuine rivalry.

I remember standing across the court from our rivals, ready to fight for every possession. Yet, in the quiet moment after the final buzzer, seeing their point guard slump down, completely exhausted, all the rivalry faded. In that split second, all I saw was a fellow athlete who had poured every ounce of energy into the game, just like us. We share the same long, demanding practices and the same absolute dedication. This mutual recognition of the sacrifice—from our local court battles to the national arena in China—creates a bond stronger than any short-lived rivalry. We honor our own effort by performing our best against someone else who has also given their absolute all.

Respect is the cornerstone of great competition. I saw this vividly during our tournament when one of our opponents stumbled hard and went down near the baseline. Instinctively, without the coaches needing to yell, one of our players immediately stopped the play to offer a hand up. That split-second decision—putting safety and dignity ahead of the ticking game clock—is the true definition of respect.

This local act of sportsmanship is exactly the spirit of zūnzhòng (respect) that we see celebrated at the National Games. This spirit elevates our National Games from mere sporting events into a powerful display of national character. It proves that we can be rivals on the clock, on the pitch, or on the mat, and yet remain united under the same five-star flag.

As we conclude, let us commit to carrying this dual legacy—the relentless pursuit of excellence, coupled with the profound respect for those who challenge us—back into our own school hallways and sports teams. Let the spirit of friendship and respect demonstrated at the National Games be the foundation for how we compete, collaborate, and succeed in everything we do.

Thank you.
